Frequently Asked Questions

When do we need to act?

It's time to act now, Driver CPC for PCV started from 10th September 2008 and LGV started from 10th September 2009.

What type of Driver CPC training is needed?

There are three main groups of subjects:

  • Advanced training in rational driving based on safety regulations
  • Applications of regulations
  • Health, roads and environmental safety, service, logistics

The content of the training is designed to deal with the subject matter that is relevant to the driver in their day to day work. Each course delivered for Driver CPC are built around these areas and then accredited by JAUPT.

Who can deliver Driver CPC training?

Only approved courses taken with approved training centres will count towards periodic training. The approval process for courses is managed on behalf of the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) by the Joint Approvals Unit for Periodic Training (JAUPT).

What Driver CPC training courses are available today?

There are many Driver CPC courses available. We offer a suite of 7 courses which include Speed awareness, Digital Tachograph and safe driving techniques. On road courses can include Eco-Driving, safe loading and advanced driving.   Please click here to see our range of Driver CPC courses.

If my drivers hold both a PCV and LGV licence; will they need to undertake two sets of periodic training?

No, only one set of periodic training needs to be completed every five years.

How do I find out what training my drivers have already received?

You can check in the following ways:

  • Check driver qualification card
  • Contact CPCRE@dsa.gsi.gov.uk
  • Ask driver for evidence of training e.g. certificates issued by a training provider
  • Call the DVLA (driver has to be present at the time of call)

Do I need to log training completion with any government agency?

All Drivers CPC records will be kept by the DSA, it is the drivers responsibility to make sure they have received the necessary training.  However, all companies should keep a record of all their drivers training and further training requirements.

Does the 35 hours training have to be done in one go or over time?

There are no rules to say how you should take the 35 hours Driver CPC training, as long as you have completed the 35 hours by 2013 (PCV) or 2014 (LGV).  But if a company has 200 drivers it may be more cost effective to do one day's training each year.

Do my drivers have to complete a 7-hour course in 1 day?

Most courses will be based on 7-hours, they can have a 3.5 hour course, but they will have to complete two 3.5 hour courses within a 24 hour period, e.g. if they take your 1st 3.5 hour course on Monday between 9:00 am and 12:30 pm, the second 3.5 course will have to be completed no later than Tuesday at 12:30 pm. Each course times (7 or 3.5 hours) do not include breaks.

Is the training practical or theory?

The courses can be either Practical or Theory or they can be a combination of both, but looking at the cost of each course you can allow up to 20 drivers on a Theory session. However, we recommend that the optimum number of delegates should be 10. But on-road will be restricted to either 1:1 or 1:2 drivers.

Where will training be delivered?

Training can be delivered at the customer’s premises, only a training centre or registered site approved by JAUPT on behalf of the Competent Authority can deliver Periodic Training. Approved training centres will be required to record information on course attendees on the driver recording database. This information must be entered on the central database within five working days of a course taking place.

How many people can be trained at once?

On average there will be up to 20 people on a Theory Courses. However, based upon our experience each workshop should be limited to 10 delegates to maintain optimum learning experience. There should be 1:1 or 1:2 on a Practical Course.
